Weekend Eight Student Observations

It is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of the course, only 2 more weekends to go and the students are already at the stage they are charging half price.
This weekend the students were learning about Sports Performance and how hypnotherapy can be greatly beneficial. They heard from Glenn Catley, his boxing journey and how hypnotherapy played a big part in becoming WBC world champion.
Day two they had a workshop with Rachel Gillibrand, Psychologist and Solution Focused Hypnotherapist on brain waves and changes brought on during Hypnotherapy. Along with and afternoon spent looking at more empirical research supporting Hypnotherapy.

Why did I train as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist

I spent most of my working life in Local Government and I knew that I wanted to look for an alternative career when the time was right. I had always been interested in Psychology so I studied for and gained a Psychology Degree and then began a Masters Degree in Criminology.
I gained an MA Certificate in Criminology, however I soon realised that although it was a fascinating subject there was no real career path that would to lead to a new career. So I began to research into Psychotherapy, Counselling and Hypnotherapy.
After looking into the various therapies I became quite disillusioned with what I found. I almost began a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy until I attended an induction meeting and spoke to the tutors and recent graduates. I personally wasn’t comfortable about the reports, in many cases, of the distress both client and therapist were appearing to experience as a result of revisiting and discussing past trauma.
As a result of addressing and revisiting the problem with the client, I learnt that the therapists themselves quite often need therapy.
I then discovered Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and it ticked every box for me. It was exactly how I wanted to practice therapy. To enable the client to move away from their problem and focus on their solutions painlessly.

What one piece of advice would I give to someone thinking of training as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist

I would just say Do It. For so many reasons, firstly Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works. You can be confident that you will qualify with the complete package of skills you need to begin your career and start to make a real difference to the lives of your clients.
For me CPHT Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been life changing in many ways. I know this to be the case for many of my colleagues who qualified with me. Obviously, everyone’s circumstances are different but almost all, myself included, are now practicing and have rewarding careers.
The CPHT course prepares you to use your skills practically from a business and marketing perspective. So the course is a complete package for your personal and career development.

What was my favourite part of the Course

So many things that I could point to really. The Academic content and quality of the course and the knowledge and ability of the Tutors.
However, I think the thing that I liked most was the atmosphere within the class. From day one people who were strangers and from very different backgrounds and ages became a really friendly and supportive group.
We formed support groups and regularly met up (back in the days when we could) and also kept in touch via social media etc.
I made several friends for life and we remain in regular contact today.
I can honestly say that I really looked forward to attending the classes.

What is the best thing about my job

Again, so many positives that I could point to. There is the freedom of being in control of my work life balance. The ability to choose to work from home and control the amount of time I work and when.
However, the most rewarding aspect is that I am doing a job that I love and always wanted to do. The feelings of satisfaction when people write testimonials or tell me how SFH has affected their lives so positively is hard to describe.
My clients come from a wide range of backgrounds and have a wide range of issues, so to be able to help so many people is incredibly rewarding.
I can honestly say I love my job.

 Answer 1:
I trained as a SFH because I wanted to find a way of helping clients who may not wish to experience, or who’s needs may not be suited to, a more reflective journey into their presenting past as I would provide in CBT and counselling.
Instead, what most attracted me to training with CPHT was the focus on a solution focused approach to meeting clients needs. To find a better way forwards within a brief solution focused approach that focused on the clients immediate need to bring positive changes into their lives without the majority of focus being on the potential preparatory factors and presentation of the individuals current issues.
I work with people with many different problems such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and wanted to find an innovative and creative way to tailor my approach to meet each individuals unique set of needs.

 Answer 2:
The advice I would give to anyone thinking of training in SFH is to allow yourself to whole heartedly delve into the course, ask questions, soak up as much knowledge, skills and inspiration you can from the most supportive and encouraging lecturers I have ever trained with, and naturally, the wisdom from fellow students that might broaden perspectives and support as you experience this journey together.
The lecturers will teach you skills and knowledge that will not only support your awareness around your own mental health, but to potentially help others and from there, who knows where your potential could lead you, for they too started out as students at a time…

 Answer 3:
My favourite thing about the course, apart from gaining an abundance of skills and knowledge, neuroscience (fascinating), that not only helped me to understand my own mental health but to better understand what may be going on within each individual who comes to oak tree therapies.
But importantly, to experience the spirit and the passion of each of the lecture-whose humble attitude’s, patience and willingness to share, to educate, was gifted to us all with good humour.
That being said, one of my favourite things about this course, was experiencing how therapy can also be made fun for us all in the most dignified manner, to help others to find ‘light’ within their darkest sky.

 Answer 4;
What I love about being a therapist is literally helping others who are perhaps a little lost in their journey through life for many reasons unique to each soul. I view my role as being a bit of a metaphorical lighthouse to sailors struggling in rough waters, to gently and safely guide each individual back to dry land with all the resources they need to continue on their path back home, within the self…
As T.S.Elliot said;
“We shall not cease from exploration,
and the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started-
and know the place for the first time.”

Weekend Seven Student Observations

Month 7 CPHT Dublin

This month the students started learning about pain and how we can help our clients who are in a loop of chronic pain with hypnotherapy and getting then engaging with the 3 Ps; Positive activity, Positive interactions and Positive thinking which interrupts the pain message with more important neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

The students then went through CORP- CPHTs research programme. Research has shown, measuring outcomes within therapy is good practice. You can find out more on the benefits of using CORP within therapy from my own practice blog Hello Positivity.

Day 2 the students were taken through an in-depth presentation on the Neuroscience of Obesity, delivered by our own senior lecturer Jennifer. How weight gain is linked to stress and by helping our clients to reduce their stress bucket we can help them break the cycle of weight gain. This Solution Focused approach does not only remove the symptoms e.g., not going for the choccy biscuit, but instead helps the client to move towards a solution and away from the problem that is the route cause of the weight gain.

If you are struggling with weight management Jennifer holds regular online weight management classes.

We are now holding open sessions for our new course in September 2021, this is a great chance to meet Jennifer and myself for an informal chat with any questions you may have. These open sessions will be held on Zoom on the last Wednesday of each month. If you would like to be added to this session you can register on Eventbrite.

Any questions feel free to drop us an email www.cphtdublin.com or Contact us.

Also don’t forget we are now on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and You Tube.

Q1 – Why did you train as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist?
One of my favourite quotes is “Be the change you want to see in the world” Mahatma Gandhi
I have seen so many people live with mental health problems. They shared a belief of being stuck with this feeling permanently; never escaping or being able to break free from a cycle of negative thought and emotions.
Due to personal first-hand experience as well as and watching people close to me struggle with mental health issues, I always had great empathy for those who were struggling. However, I often felt so helpless. I therefore wanted to show people there was a way back to having good mental health and finding true contentment and happiness in life.
This quote acted as the catalyst where I began the search to find the perfect course that would best provide me with the skills I needed to help those around me who were experiencing difficulties they wished to overcome. I found CPHT from an online search and just knew instantly that this was the perfect course in terms of content, structure and delivery. I registered for the course shortly after speaking with senior lecturers Nicola and Alex who reaffirmed my instincts that this was the exact course I was looking for.

Q2 – What one piece of advice would you give someone thinking of training as a SFH?
Believe in yourself and go for it! If you be brave and take the first step forward, you will be rewarded with one of the most life changing and rewarding decisions you have ever made. I have honestly never looked back since walking through the doors at the Belfast course back in September 2019

Q3 – What was your favourite thing about the course?
How well the course was delivered. The lecturers and course content are simply first class, really interactive and I had so much fun learning. The interaction between the lecturers and my classmates was so supportive. The tools and techniques learned have become invaluable to both myself and my clients especially during these times. Will carry these through my whole lifetime.
Q4 – What is the best thing about your job?
Seeing my clients improve and change over such a short space of time – witnessing a client become free of limiting beliefs and the positive impact this has on their life is just amazing.

Q1 – Why did you train as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist?

I’ve always had an interest in hypnotherapy and qualified in ‘traditional’ hypnotherapy some years ago. I felt there was something missing in my work with clients and was looking for a course to refresh and update my skills when I came across a leaflet on CPHT and Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. I did some research and realised that the Solution Focused approach was exactly what I wanted – working with the client to find solutions and focusing on the present and the future rather than dwelling on the problem which had brought them to me in the first place.

Q2 – What one piece of advice would you give someone thinking of training as a SFH?

Go for it, you won’t regret it. Not only will you finish the course with a nationally recognised and accredited qualification that will offer you great career options, but you will also find that it helps in your own day-to-day life. You will look at things differently and be able to manage your own stresses and challenges much more effectively.

Q3 – What was your favourite thing about the course?

The best thing was the variety of people on the course, other participants and tutors. The course was fun and the support from everyone was great throughout. Also knowing the strength of the CPHT network in terms of availability of supervision, CPD courses and potential career progression.

Q4 – What is the best thing about your job?

Seeing the positive change in people as they come to realise that they can overcome some of the issues that they face. The approach we use engages the individual in the process from the start and this allows them to feel ownership of the outcome. It’s not something that is ‘done’ to them and they walk away with a solution that is of their own making.

Long term career options, great colleagues, ongoing support from CPHT and the AfSFH, able to work over Zoom – I could go on!
